Sufi Night with Ilahi Sufi Qawwali Ensemble

April 11, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm UTC+8

Join us for an evening of Sufi devotional music, poetry & mystic prayer with ILAHI.

The voices of 9 women weave together to sing traditional Sufi poetry from ancient India and Pakistan, bringing in melodies & rhythms that capture the heart & intoxicate the spirit. This musical style called “qawwali” incorporates passionate improvisation and beautiful compositions. This is the first female ensemble of this kind in the world, guided by renowned qawwali musician and teacher Tahir Qawwal, who holds down the powerful rhythm for this music.

Qawwali music dates back to the 13th century and is the music of Sufism, also known as ‘Islamic mysticism’. Qawwali music was originally performed at Sufi shrines, and as part of a ‘mehfil-e sama’, a gathering for spiritual listening. Qawwali music is performed with the intention of bringing listeners to a state of ecstasy or spiritual union with God. It can be an intense and profoundly moving experience, no matter your personal faith.

features 9 powerful female singers – accompanied & guided by master musician Tahir Qawwal on percussion. Led by Amie Parvati, Bhairavi Devi & 7-year-old Aaliyah Lyons on harmonium, the ensemble performs traditional devotional songs from Pakistan & India. Tahir Qawwal, the beloved leader of the qawwali group Fanna-fi-Allah, has paved the way for this talented group of Bali-based women to learn and perform this music. Qawwali is traditionally offered by all-male ensembles in the East.

Tahir’s recently released documentary series ‘Music of the Mystics’ takes people on a journey to the heart of Qawwali culture.
