The Buleleng Agriculture Service is continuing the genetic engineering of Munduk red rice.

This year the seed engineering trial entered the third phase with a demonstration plot covering an area of 20 acres in Subak Sambangan, Sambangan Village, Sukasada District, Buleleng. Genetic engineering for the red rice variety Cicih Gondrong was carried out to maximize the production of Buleleng brown rice.

Since 2019, the Agriculture Office of Buleleng Regency has collaborated with the National Atomic Energy Agency (Batan) to genetically engineer red rice varieties of Cicih Gondrong, local rice red rice in Munduk Village, Banjar District, Buleleng. The development of agricultural technology requires five seed trials before it is determined and cultivated more widely.

Head of the Buleleng Agriculture Service, I Made Sumiarta, said that the three trials conducted at the demonstration plots showed positive results. Munduk’s red rice varieties were engineered to get a shorter harvest life.

“So far, our brown rice varieties in Munduk can only be harvested after six months of planting. With this engineering, the seeds will be able to be harvested under 100 days, like other rice varieties, ” said Sumiarta, Monday (10/5).

The development of Munduk red rice is carried out by the Buleleng Agriculture Service to maintain Buleleng food security, as well as to maintain Buleleng’s typical red rice. So far, the cultivation of red rice, which has super quality and many enthusiasts, is still surviving in Munduk Village on an area of 50 acres. Annual production reaches 148.698 tons, with a productivity of 4 tons per hectare.

In the last three years with genetic engineering agricultural technology, the red rice seed was adapted to be developed in other areas of Buleleng Regency. Especially in upland areas with stable irrigation water supply, such as Subak Cengana, Subak Sambangan in Sambangan Village, Sukasada District.

Sumiarta added that the genetic engineering program is still waiting for two further tests. So that in the future the seeds developed and patented are the best seeds from the five tests that have been carried out.
