Two suspects with the initials IWW (42), a Denpasar resident and SMJ (56), a resident from Bangli, Bali, were caught carrying counterfeit money worth Rp2.1 billion or . They tried to deposit money in a savings account.
Finally, the counterfeit money did not pass the screening.
Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of the Surabaya Police, Oki Ahadian, said that 15 thousand banknotes of fake US dollars were confiscated from the hands of the two suspects.
“Even though it is fake, the quality is quite good,” he said, Monday (8/3).
He said the two suspects had come to Surabaya to meet with witness JF. Then while at the witness’s house, the suspect IWW handed over US dollar banknotes to JF.
“The two perpetrators tried to put this money into the bank… However, due to a large amount of money, there was an examination,” he added.
From the screening process, the money was found to be fake. Bank officers reported the incident to the police.
As a result of their actions, IWW and SMJ were charged with Article 245 of the Criminal Code concerning the circulation of counterfeit money with a maximum imprisonment of 15 years.
“There are differences in the characteristics of the authenticity of these foreign banknotes. The shape is also imprecise,” Oki added.
